PRINT DESIGN
DEC 2020
Initiated Northeastern's first Chinese-American arts and literary publication on campus, facilitated team and community workshops, and directed production of the publication.
ROLE
Founder
Create an arts and literary magazine to provide an outlet for Chinese-American voices on campus. Gather a team to organize, design, and publicize the magazine and gain university recognition.
DESIGN CHALLENGE
With a team of 3, we brainstormed the identity for Ganbei and the theme for the Fall, having conversations about what kind of imagery creates comfort in the Chinese-American community. We determined the theme for Ganbei Zine to be Nostalgia, as it entices healing and reflection within the cultural conversations in the Chinese-American community.
TEAM BRAINSTORM
The idea for Ganbei originated in my Graphic Design 1 class in Fall 2021. The prompt was to design 3 magazine covers under a self-created concept. I used this opportunity to conceptualize a publication centered on Chinese-American experiences, inspired by magazines like Banana Magazine. Originally, the title of the magazine was “General Tso & Me,,” a reference to the Chinese-American dish, General Tso’s Chicken. Included below are original iterations of the illustrated magazine covers.
IDEATION
Ganbei Magazine is Northeastern's first arts and literary magazine based on the Chinese American experience that started this semester. Our name means "Cheers!" in Mandarin, used when people put their drinks together at celebratory feasts; and thus, an expression of celebration and unity. As an organization, we aim to bring together Chinese-American students on campus in the same way that people would when saying Ganbei at the table. By collaborating heavily with Northeastern's Chinese Student Association, Ganbei Magazine uses the arts to uplift and diversify the voices heard at Northeastern University.
